Canelle

An apple turnover and coffee from Canelle bakery.

It's the first of September and while it's not time yet to break out my sweaters, I do feel the slightest dip in temperature. I'm starting to long for those chilly days of fall.

I recently started grad school and I'm looking forward to seeking out news places to spend my afternoons doing homework. I'm trying to explore more of the NYC area but this afternoon decided to stay closer to home by visiting Cannelle, a French patisserie in Long Island City.

The bakery isn't big, with just three tables inside it's not really built for hanging out. The pastry display takes up most of the space, but what a display it is.

Those with a sweet tooth will find an array of treats to choose from. There are slices of gateau Breton, flaky apple turnovers, peach tarts, and macarons available, among other desserts. For those who desire something savory, the bakery also offers sandwiches on baguettes.

This afternoon I decided to treat myself to a canelé, a small cake with a caramelized crust and custardy interior, one of the apple turnovers, and a jambon beurre sandwich. I took my small picnic to the bakery's outdoor seats, with a cup of hot coffee, and enjoyed the breezy morning.

I love Canelle, I've been there a few times before, and I'm sure I'll be going again once fall settles in. Their coffee is delicious and their turnovers are incredible. I can't wait to enjoy them again with a walk on the water in Gantry park.
